What is the best bit to break a 2 year old 16 hands-tall gelding2007-11-24 21:19:09

yeah , he's 2 years old and already at 16 hands! I need to know what kind of bit to start breaking him with...I am going English not Western so I need a good breakin' bit to start him on...

At two years old, even at 16hh, he's really not old enough to be started under saddle. His knees won't close until he is close to 3.

But in answer to your actual question, I've started all of my horses with a very mild snaffle. My personal favorite is a double-jointed (french-link) full-cheek snaffle. The french link keeps the bit from interfering with the roof of his mouth and the full-cheek sides will give him more asistance with steering.

I'm a fan of the JP Korsteel bits. They're inexpensive and nicely made.

Get one that is smooth and gentle. If he starts of with a sore mouth, he's probably not going to want to take the bit again.
I all ways start mine in a snaffle. It pulls on the sides of his mouth and helps to teach him to give his head. Hope that helps.
A medium weight french link D ring snaffle.
A snaffle, absolutely. Either a normal single-jointed mouth or a french link. I'd suggest a full-cheek but any of the ring styles (loose ring, d-ring, eggbut) is perfectly fine for training.

A plain snaffle is not only great for training, but most horses will also be perfectly fine in a snaffle for the rest of their lives (plus it's one bit you can count on being show legal in any discipline.)

Several choices spring to mind, a traditional breaking bit with keys or a D ring or Fulmer snaffle. Fulmers are better for driving them in, not so easy to pull the bit through. With our TB yearlings, we always start when first tacking them up with a bit with keys. They like to sit there and munch and play with it and while they are busy with that, they are not so tense about the tack and girth, distracts them. Once they settle and we progress a bit, we swap to a regular bit like those already mentioned.
I've always started horses on a snaffle bit. It doesn't really matter how big, or what style your training... snaffles are the best way to introduce a bit, they are easy on the mouth, dont pinch. I've always put vasaline in the corners of the horses mouth.. this helps prevent any sores from poping up. & I also cheat, i put some maple syrup on the bit.. make it a lil more tastey
