What is the best breed of horse for polo
help!
Answers:I personally like TB's. I like TB's mixed with some native Argentine blood to keep them a little smaller. I've also ridden some of friends' horses brought in from Argentina, all native stock, they were very nice indeed. I have used Appendix QH's also very nice, esp for arena polo, because they are a bit more quiet. That being said, I've seen people use QH's for arena polo because they can turn on a dime however... they don't seem to have the stamina to keep running for the entire match. I've also asked this question to a number of people and to quote my grandfather on this matter, "when it comes to polo, nothing compares to a good old thoroughbred."
Right now I don't keep a string because we are moving in the military all the time but if I were to assemble one I would want a good mix, you need a horse for every circumstance.
Someone else has said you don't need to have a smaller horse, she is absolutely right. I've played a 16.3hh TB who was wonderful, so very fast to the ball, I had to use a 53 mallet on him, but well worth it!

Dixie - I didn't know you played! Which military school did you attend? Valley Forge? I played a couple of them in arena polo in college, tough team! I never thought I would marry into the military after college but I married an OCS person so now we can't keep an entire string of horses at the moment because, well the military has a 200 lb pet limit we've already violated egregiously! So until we're settled I don't get to do as much as I would like...
