What is the best horse dewormer How often And how big of a dosage2007-11-24 21:19:11

I have a 16.3 14/15 year old Appendix gelding. I only go on trails with him and trailer out at least 8 times a year.

wow he must be a handful, but get a ruler to measure his withers and around because wormer feedings go by the weight and on the paste wormer which is what i use usually apple flavored it says the weight dosage and directions, i cant for the life of me remember what it is called but it is green however we ahve used equimax and that one is pretty good. I would suggest worming him once in the spring and then one more time sometime in the beginning of winter. Horses need to be wormed, generally, on a monthly basis. It is best to do a rotation of different products/wormer types in order to avoid the worms building a tolerance and also some wormers only work on some worms while others eliminate different worms. There's Strongid and Panacur and another type of wormer, but like I said, rotation is important. The tubes often have a dose measured out based on the weight of your horse (you can approximate using a weight/height tape). Regardless of where you take your horse, worms come from dirt and the environment, so staying at home doesn't make your horse safe from them. Also.the wormer goes in their mouth, not their butt. Seriously, I knew a lady who tried to put it in the wrong end the first time. Another thing is, that your vet can "tube worm" your horse and that lasts 3 months, but the horse won't like it!
