What is the best kind of bit to use on a roping horse
well i breakaway rope and have an all around horse, i use a junior cow horses bit and it used to be enough but now he doesnt really listen to it anymore. what kind of bit would really make him stop? he is 8 years old.
Answers:There are only two basic bits: snaffle and curb. The bit doesn't make the horse more manageable. It's your skill as a horseman(woman). I get alot of "thumbs-down' as too many of these people are "horse-owners", not horse-smart. Horses, dogs, and other animals don't have "bad-behavior", it's the owner. Train the owner! There are many tricks, through proper training, that can make this horse do as you want. You need to learn about horses through reading, and watching someone who knows what they're doing. This answer will help you if you take the time to learn about horses. Then you'll not have problems which send you here for answers that are either wrong, harmful to your horse, or so far-fetched that they are laughable. Good luck.
Something along the lines of this type of bit...

realatively high port with copper wire on both sides is what my trainer uses on practically ever bridle! It is made to stop horse faster and easier.
I'd just either move up one in strength or straighten him back out to where he'll listen to his current bit.
You might consider some ground work and basic retraining to get him to stop. If you continue to move up to harsher and harsher bits you'll ruin his mouth and then he won't listen to anything.
Why don't you call or email a professional trainer and ask them? Perhaps Robbie Schroder or Bobby Harrison, both in Gainesville/Whitesboro TX, both have websites and I'm sure either of them would be willing to give you some advice. They are both very nice and have won multiple World championships, heading, heeling, calf roping and cow horse. They should be listed under Schroeder Ranch and Harrison Ranch.
Good luck!
I think you need to give him a refresher course on stopping. If you keep going to a harsher bit, then in time you will not be able to go to a harsher bit. Then what?? So if you bite it in the butt now, you will not have to put a harsher bit in his mouth. Then you'll be happier & he will too!!
