What is the best way to get a horse that is terrified of water used to it2007-11-24 21:19:14

Our horse gets so scared of water, when we spray him with fly spray he rears up and pulls away. He gets so terrified of it.

oh my i cant agree with most of these answers! you are right you shouldnt tie him yet. that will make him feel more restrained. what we do is we rinse our horses off after we work them. if they are rowdy we use 2 people/ 1 holds him the other sprays. try being on flat ground or in a round pen. squirt him, if he reacts poorly, ask him to work, like trotting around on the lead rope than try again. each time he acts up make him work. he will begin to (by repitition0 learn that acting up ='s work. than he will be more likely to start to accept the water. we have a mare that we just got rerecently that had that problem. all horses learn from repitition. just make sure you do it in a safe manner and do reward him after he accepts it and stands still. good luck to you.

Well, first start off by dumping water on him and then making him put his hoof in a bucket of water. Then once he is used to that you should help him into a ittle pond and each time he seems like he could go deeper then bring him deeper. I had the same problem and this worked with my Thoroughbred. His name is Thunder. He literally loves water now!

I had the same problem and what I did was i put a sprinkler in the field, but made sure there was no way that he could get tangled. Then I put his grain by it. He loved grain and after an hour he finally started to eat by it. after a few days of doing that, I would gently spray him with it he spooked for awhile, but eventually would come back time after time. eventually he was use to it and sosn't mind the water.

Most horses don't like water, and it takes alot of time and patience to get one used to water.
