What is the best way to post on a horse2007-11-24 21:19:15

I have some difficulties getting a certain horse to trot, let alone have myself trot. Does anyone have any tips to make it easier?

Answers:

Use a crop to get him trotting if he's stubborn. Then, rise in the saddle when his inside shoulder moves back, and sit when the outside shoulder moves back. You may need to glance down at first, but then you should be able to feel without looking if you are on the correct diagonal or not.

If the horse is just shuffling along at his trot and not using himself properly, it can be more difficult to post. On a horse with a good trot and proper impulsion, it is very simple to feel the rhythm and post accordingly.

Edit: A poster below said to get spurs. I would highly advise against that idea. If you are having problems getting your horse to trot and learning to post, there is no possible way you have enough control of your legs and feet to keep from spurring the horse unnecessarily. Using spurs without a secure leg position is a great way to get bucked off or to desensitize an already dull horse to your cues.

If they are stubborn and dont want to trot, dont be afraid to use a little bit off the crop. First, lightly tap her on the but.. if she doesnt listen... repeat this... but a tad bit harder. When she does trot, reward her with a treat.
