What is the best way to train a horse without a round pen
I have a young Tennessee Walking horse that is about 18 mos. I don't have access to a round pen. I have had him for a while, he leads and picks up his hoofs etc. He is kind of stubborn, but not too bad. He has a TON of attitude! He can get very sassy at times. However, he was recently gelded so that should make a difference in a couple more weeks. Any suggestions?
Answers:Even if you don't have a round pen, a lunge line will keep him in check and you can keep exercising that attitude out of him. Also get a whip you can pop or lightly touch him with that keeps him out of kicking distance and make him turn around and go in different directions. Also start teaching him to back four steps and come up four steps because you said so. He may need a chin chain at times for some muscle. Do not let him get away with kicking, backing his ears or biting at you. If he does make him go round and round until he gets tired and asks you nicely to lighten up.
Ground driving ground driving ground driving!
This is my new found love in the horse training world! I've been training/riding/showing all different ages & breeds for 10 years, and only just this summer learned the fine art of ground driving. You can literally teach your horse just about everything it needs to know without ever being on its back.
At his age, I wouldn't go longeing crazy, but you certainly can longe him in circles, but the ground driving lines with a curcingle give you much more control. You can bit him up with a training bit, and hook the ground lines to the bit, run them through the curcingle's rings, and teach teach teach teach.
