First make sure your horse follows his nose and you can move his shoulders wherever you want to.

With his nose pull his nose in the direction you want him to follow, and keep pulling/bumping till is inside foot comes around and under your stirrup. When he is following his nose he will be able to follow it around the barrel when you ask him.

With his shoulders start at a trot and trot a circle and take the inside rein and push his shoulders up and out of the circle and make him drift to the outside of the circle. When that is accomplished at the trot, move up to the canter. When you have him moving his shoulders well you will have more control when you are approaching the barrel and he is too close(move his shoulders over and out) or too far away (having him follow his nose to be closer to the barrel). When you watch barrel racers one of the things you see is they are asking the horse to turn lets say to the right and you see the horse not following its nose and pushing its shoulders to the left. Teaching him to follow his nose and move his shoulders around are GREAT things to teach any horse.

i think first the horse need to learn how to pivot and do shot slides and i prefer to think ouf barrels in a triangle form, runup to a barrel do a short slide once the horse's nose is a little before the barrel, make sure you dont over shoot to much, slide till the the horses butt hide the barrel from the side sorta then pivot around or "rollback" and run to the next one just like a triangle of course al of this takes about 5 seconds and a well trained horse, it works for me but then again im a novice, if you watch barrel racong on tv or at a rodeo those professional horses just sorta slide all around the barrel!!
