What is the difference between a loose ring snaffle and a bradoon bit2007-11-24 21:21:40

The only thing I can visually tell is that the Bradoon is smaller, mm wise. My horse is 14.3hh, but has a 5" mouth. 21mm bits are too wide for her, she can't properly put her mouth around - even 16mm are a bit big (the O ring looks huge and seems to take half her face). I can't remember what type of bit I got originally, I think it was Sprenger, but I don't have $70 right now for a bit. I was wondering if JP were good bits? I'm assuming Stubben bits are good considering their tack is amazing. What's everyone's experience? My pony and I do dressage, if that's of any concern - we don't compete anymore, but just for reference, are bradoon bits allowed in shows?

bradoons are used in double bridles, and arn't supposed to be used alone (meaning without another bit). I don't see why you would have a hard time finding a snaffle to fit, I show arabs that have tiny mouths, and have never had a problem with finding a snaffle. I wouldnt try and show dressage (or really anything) in a bradoon bit alone, I'm not sure on the rules having to do with this, but I can't imagine that it would be allowed. You would at the very least get some points docked for it.

I dont think the brand of bit matters much. Make sure it doesnt pinch and it fits properly, and you should be fine. There really is no need to spend 70 dollars on a snaffle bit unless you have some special circumstances.

Bradoons are smaller, usually used with a curb in a double bridle. You can get a smaller o ring snaffle for your pony, maybe a 4 1/2? I like the bits made by Koresteel They are not as expensive as Stubben or Myler--but they are just as good I have had some for years. My favorite bit is a n eggbutt french mouth snaffle:)
