What is the easiest way to get a horse to neckrein
I have an ex-plow horse and I want to use him for the SCA. He does everything else great, but he plow-reins. I heard crossing the reins under the neck, what other ways have you guys tried and what is the best (for him, not the best for me). I'm not looking for the easiest, per se, but the best way for him to learn, and the safest for him. What works for you?
Answers:I teach my horses to neck rein by riding in a pasture with yucca. we start jogging toward a yucca and then just very gently lay a rein on his neck so he feels it and turns his head slightly to go around the yucca. you can also neck rein one side and plow rein the other and eventually stop the plow rein but I like the yucca trick better. Good Luck

We have lots of horses at work that just plowrein and slowly this is how we get them to neckrein...
First, make sure that they understand leg cues. Does he move off your leg? That's the first thing.
When he starts understanding how to move off your leg, then start "bridging" the reins so it kinda looks like bicycle handlebars.
When you rein your horse left, give him pressue on his right side with his leg, and then bring the reins leftwards...so the right rein rests against his neck and if he is resistant to moving off your leg, then pull that left rein until he turns. The opposite for a right turn.
