What is the most important practical lesson you have learnt about breaking in/ training young horses2007-11-24 21:21:43

Things that I can apply and use, and anything that you think is important that isnt done enough.e.g natural horsemanship, patience, whatever.

Thank you!

The most important thing that I have learned is there is no such thing as a "thirty day wonder horse". To make any thing of quality takes time. You can make a cubic zircona in a few months. It takes years to make a real diamond. So take your time, go slow, and in a couple of years you will have a diamond that can handle anything, instead of a CZ that will crack under pressure. Good Luck!

Patience! learn to read your horses body language he will give you sign's
Trust, go slow, have patience, ground work and ground manners before saddle work. Ground work is the foundation of a good horse.

Hope I helped you!

Happy Horse Keeping!

Patience and consistancy. Also, EVERYONE becomes a lawn dart at some point! LOL
Don't over do it with young horses, don't try and make a horse into something its not. I got my last mare when she was very green broke, I bought her completly based on the fact my other horse terrified me, and I needed something sweet, quiet and green (I'm an experianced rider, I wanted a challenge, but not something that was going to be 'scary'). She had everything mentally I was looking for, I got really attached sold my show horse to make her into my show horse. Fact is she could not physically hold up to the training it required. I spent soo much time and money training her for the show ring, she became mean and grumpy because she was being asked to do things she had no aptitude for. After getting her back from training she somewhat lost her sweet, laid back temperment. I ended up selling her to an older lady as a trail horse/pasture orniment and she is much happier. So yeah, basicly my lesson is that no matter how much you like a horse you can't change what it is, sometimes you just have to move on.
Breaking horses is dangerous and everyone seems to be a trainer or wants to be one these days. Putting a green horse with a green trainer spells trouble. Not everyone who tries this is going to have something happen but breaking colts is NOT glamorous and is takes a lot of work. You cannot learn to break a horse in "answers". I have seen so many spoiled, messed up horses come up my driveway to be "fixed" after the owner started training the thing and found out 3 months later that they had failed. If you really want to be a trainer, get out there and find some experienced horseman and learn, learn, learn!
I learned that I can always learn more!! Breaking a colt is not for someone that wants a Saturday project! You can ruin a very good horse if you don't know what the heck you are doing! I know, I did it. I thought I knew everything I needed to and I found out that I didn't know a thing!! Many, years later and many horses later I feel comfortable training MY OWN colts. You need to find someone that has years of experience and learn from them. Then find someone else that has years of experience learn what they know. Listen to what people say, try it if it works use it, if it don't then throw it out and do something else. After many years with horses I went to a Clinton Anderson clinic and found out that there is SO much more to learn. Never think you know it all!!!
