What is the proper head carriage for a Paso Fino2007-11-24 21:21:44

My brother got a 5 yr old Paso Fino. I ride Hunters and am used to wanting the dropped, tucked nose. He naturally carries his head up and I don't know if I should be pushing him to drive from behind up through the neck to a dropped nose. Make sense? I'm riding bare back with a simple snaffle w/shanks and light rein.

Answers:

Paso's as with a majority of other gated horses, carry themselves with a high arched neck, some breaking at the pole with their nose in and on the verticle. Others (most) will have the high arched neck with a slight nose out. Either way this way of head carriage is much different than what you are used to with the Hunters, but very normal for the Paso and is apart of their breeding.

If you're trying to change his gait, don't

Paso Finos have the smoothest gait among horses.

NECK: Medium in length, set on at an angle permitting rather high head carriage, but neck is carried in an arch. Throat latch should be well defined, but not to narrow.

this is what i got from the breed standard, and it seems to me that most of the ones i have seen do carry their heads pretty high compared to some horses!
