I hose everything down with warm water, except for the head, from top to bottom. I fill a bucket with horse shampoo and water then sponge it all on them. I use a rubber mitt to work the soap in and let it sit a minute and work on the mane and tail. I sponge the shampoo onto the mane and massage it into the roots. For the tail, I dunk it into the bucket of soapy water, up to the tailbone. Then I pour the water on the tailbone, massageing the soap in to make sure the skin gets clean. Lastly I hose him down, top to bottom, making sure to rinse out all traces of soap. I don't like to wash the face, but if necessary I'll use a sponge for the whole face. Use a sweat scraper to get off excess water (use your hands on the legs). Lastly I apply a spray on, leave in conditioner to the whole horse.

As far as making sure he doesn't freak, start with a slow flow and apply it to the legs and work up. If he starts getting upset back off, then try again. Make sure the water is the right temp, many horses do not like a cold shower.

as long as it is not cold outside, get the hose and start at the legs. go up slowly and then scrub with shampoo. don't get their faces or ears wet. then rinse. use the "squeegie" tool to get all excess water off. then if you care at all, tie them up loose until they are mostly dry. if you dont, and you let them roam the pasture, they will most likely roll in the mud. i don't care too much, but thats just me. :)
