What is this bump on my horses left underside
I have a 20 year old mare and I just noticed a bump, about the size of a golfball, on her left underside (mid-belly, but not by her teats). I was feeling it and it has a little scab about the size of a point of a pen, maybe bigger. I have no idea what it could be. Could someone please tell me? It might be a bug bite that turned into an infection. She hasn't had any of her shots for this year, but she is getting that done this week. What should I do? By the way, if it makes any difference, i live in Southwest Minnesota.
Answers:Yes it could be a bug bite or sting, but it could also be a puncture that got infected and has an abcess. Is it solid, or can you move it? Does she lay her ears back like it's painful? I'd just call the vet and ask what he thinks before you vaccinate. If it turns out to be an infection then vaccinating would add more stress to her. More then likely though I'd say she had a reaction to a bite or sting and to just hold off on the vaccinations til it goes down.
It could be a bug bite or sting. Does it bother her when you touch it? Is it warm to the touch? Is it soft or hard? Is she a grey horse who would be prone to tumors? This is a bit late in the season to get shots, but ask your vet when he comes out to take a look at it.
hmm at her age it could be anything, but if there is a centre scab thing...it would appear that something has bit or stung her...if you can, try squeezing gently...if stuff comes out of it...there could be an egg in there that was laid by some lousy 6 legged critter, best to get all of that stuff out and then put some drawing slave on it...if she won't let you squeeze it...then put the drawing salve on it...it will probably take out what ever is in there.
my dad's a vet...it could be what's called a sarcoma, a sort of tumer...if it becomes painful to your horse, you should call your vetrinarian out and they'll remove it...if not it should just go away by itself. It could also be hives...my horses get them at this time of year...it's just an allergic reaction. Give her a cool bath...and it should go away..hope this helps!
my gelding got that i and thought that it would go away. i went out for a ride and when i came back, the bumps had exploded and they were ***** and make the skin fall off and it looked raw. i would recommend using Blu-Kote until you can get a vet to look at her. i swear by that stuff. btw, it turns out that it was a fungile infection caused by damp environments and/or peeing on his bellly.
