What is wrong with my horse2007-11-24 21:21:47

My horse is very sluggish and isn't like herself. She will eat grain and hay but not a lot of grain. She drinks enough. She poops but not a lot. We called the vet and she told us to give her bantamine but I want to know what is wrong with her. shes only 12. And she lays down every so often. If you can help please do

i had a horse that did the same thing whenever the weather changed she would start to colic a good friend of mine told me to start giving her banamine right b4 the weather changes or when its about to change to keep her from going into this idk if this will help but it might

Is she acting uncomforatable? Like kicking at her stomach or anything?

Well if it is a mare, how long has this been going on? Because they get cramps too. Or maybe you should just give her about a 2 week brake and see if she improves. Maybe her legs are sore from something.

It could be colic (i.e. abdominal pain). If the banamine didn't help, a vet should examine your horse. Some cases of colic are severe enough to require surgery.

Colic can be caused by many things - torsions, impactions, obstructions, renal disease, etc. Horses that colic might lay down and roll, kick at their abdomen, sweat, seem nervous or stressed, and pass minimal to no feces.

Sounds like colic although its good if shes still pooping even if its not a lot. Don't give her anymore grain that can make it worse. Give her as much hay as she wants.

It would be impossible to diagnos your horse without seeing it. Even a vet needs to be able to do a hands on assessment, and that sounds to me what you need to do right away.
