What makes a horses hoves keep floundering
it hapens every summer when shes in the pasture and we cut back the grass but it still happens..
Answers:Ditto amanda, get her off the grass....
No grain, just hay.
You mean "foundering" right? Your horse has already foundered once or twice? Then you should be carefully monitoring her diet. Sounds like she is geting too rich a diet and her laminitis is flaring each and every time. That rich, spring grass is not good for her if she founders easily. Keep her on dry hay and not too much grain. Then call your vet and ask his/her advice on how to keep your animal safe and healthy.
Floundering, huh? Wow, that's bad... never heard of it :)
Founder, however, is the condition which affects the coffin bone in a horse's foot. It starts out as laminitis, an inflammation of the sensitive tissue on the inside of the hoof wall, and between the coffin bone.
Usually, once a horse founders, it will continue to do so periodically for the rest of its life unless stricly maintained. Exposure to even the slightest bit of green grass in a chronicly laminitic horse will develop laminitis again and again, and laminitis will cause founder, which is when the coffin bone actually rotates out of place.
I would cut her OFF the grass completely.
I learned more about founder than I wanted to know when I purchased my show horse that had foundered with her previous owner.
