The standard rule that I was taught is that passing in an arena is always "left shoulder to left shoulder." Riders working at faster gaits ALWAYS have the right of way when it comes to the use of the track-and anyone who is only walking, or who has to stop to adjust something, needs to come to the middle of the arena. In addition, anyone on foot ( like an instructor) ALWAYS has the right of way over people who are mounted. These rules apply to both indoor and outdoor settings. Hope this helps.

In most places, riders are supposed to pass left to left when going the same direction. If you are going the same direction, you should probably stay on the outside because it is easier for the other riders to pass you on the inside than the outside. If they are not very cooperative, you can try to make sure that whenever they change direction you do also so that it is easier for them.

Just make sure they don't get mad at you and not allow you to ride!!
