What should I do whith my horse who has had a fluid pocket for close to a month2007-11-24 21:22:32

My horse all of a sudden was lame one evening. the next morning, she was standing in the middle of the pasture. she wouldnt even move for her grain. She had a huge fluid pocket on her stifle area.I called the vet and she gave me some antibiodics. later, we ended up draining the pocket. it filled back up, like i knew it would. it has now been maybe 4 weeks of no antibiotics and its been almost a month since my horse has had the fluid pocket and she still has it. what should i do?

A boarder at the barn I worked for had an ongoing problem with her appendix qh. He would get a fluid pocket on one of his front knees, the vet then would have to drain it and we kept it wrapped with an ace bandage it would have to been drained three to four times before the swelling would stay down. Then it will come back again several months to a year later. I think his was similar to a ganglion cyst that people get, (a weak spot in the tendon sheath that expands and lets synovial fluid collect) as the antibiotics didn't do any good with him either. your vet should be able to look at the fluid under a microscope to see what type of fluid it is and if there is any infection present.

I would call the vet back - sounds like it needs to be opened - possible abcess and or other issue that doesnt appear to be corrected with the traditional forms of treatment.

If your vet isnt responsive and you feel that there is something else going on that isnt being addressed.Get a second opinion from another vet.
