What should I feed my already quite chubby 14 yr gelded arab horse, and how often2007-11-24 21:22:33

Hes already rpetty chubby, but I ride him 1 hr a night..Im not sure if I should feed him grain. If so, what kind, how much and how often. If not? Then do I just spread hay, and leave him eat grass. Help?

Answers:

If he's on grain, slowly back him off grain entirely for now until he is a healthy weight again.

The vast majority of horses in this country (er, meaning USA) can survive very well on good quality pasture and hay alone... my QH/Welsh mix is fat (he's retired from riding), and all he gets is medium quality hay! The pastures at his boarding facility are all quite dead due to drought, yet he's still a little chubble. Some of them just stay like that... ;P Some Arabs are known to be very easy keepers like my pony.

Since he is already overweight, grain is not necessary, it will just add to the problem. Depending on the kind of hay you feed, consider adjusting down the amount 1/2 a flake at a time over a month. If he is on grass all the time then maybe a flake a day would be sufficient.
I'd think you could lay off graining him till winter.
As long as the hay and pasture are of good quality it should be fine for him to just eat that as long as he is on pasture 24/7. You may want to give him half a can of mixed rolled oats and corn chops after you ride him to help keep his energy up and nutrition up. I use a coffee can to measure my horses feed. In the winter you can up him to half a can in the morning and inthe evening or more. My barrel horse eats a corn and oat mix of a full coffee can in the morning and in the evening. Corn and oats don't make your horse very fat, just gives them extra energy and nutrition. it is when you feed sweet feeds and alfalfa that a horse gets fat.
Keep the grass, but lower your horse's hay intake. Do not put him on grain, it will only help him keep on weight. Depending on your grass pasture, you may even be able to keep him on only that until he is normal weight again.
