What should i feed my standardbred that wouldnt fiz him up but would still give him vitamins
i have a 10yr old 16hh chestnut standardbred and we trail ride and sometimes ride around the arena. He works well but can get full of himself sometimes, he does get fed twice daily with 4 chaff 1 lucerne but we are afraid he just isnt getting enough vitamins and someone told me that lucerne is just crap!
One of my mates suggested an all natural herb called Vitalis? Plz i need help he gets ridden at least twice a week due to weather. We also dont wanna pay heaps for it.
Answers:I suggest speaking with your veterinarian about the hay in your area - your vet can tell you more about your feed than you may realize. If you really need technical info, you can send a sample of the hay in for analysis to see what the mineral and vitamin content is.
The reason I suggest this is that if your horse is on good pasture and or hay, they typically do not need more supplements unless they are used heavily (racing etc.). You can do more harm than good with over supplementing a horse. Stick with good hay and a mineral salt block and they are just fine. Most suppliments do rev them up...they contain extra fat and protien that the horse has to burn off somehow!
The very best you can do for your horse is adding a grain product by Nutrena called Safechoice.
Research it at their website then talk to your vet about it. I aslo add Buckeye's Ultimate Finish to two of my horse's diets. Talk about sheen, shine and hair growth!
I also prefer Nutrena Safe Choice. I have a 27 year old Quarter horse. An 11 year old ex race horse Throughbred and a 10 year old Morab.
