What size pony/horse can I get away with
I really like ponies, but I'm just wondering how small of a horse I can get away with. I want to show and jump. I don't want to look weird at a show with a pony too small for me.
I am 17, 5'3, and weigh about 105 lbs.
Answers:I think it depends on what kind of showing you want to do. You could definitely ride a medium pony. But, for hunter shows, they generally say only juniors can ride ponies, and at 17, you don't have much time left. Maybe look for something around 14.3h. If you want to do pony jumpers, I think there is no age limit (but I'm not sure). There definitely is no age restriction in eventing, which is way more fun anyway! I did a baby novice event (2'6") on a 12.3 hand pony I was training, when I was slightly older than you and the same size. We actually won the Senior Baby Novice division against all adults riding horses.
ohh.. so your pretty small! you can get away with a medium or large pony.. im 4'11 and i ride a medium pony.. my trainers are both over 5'3 and they ride ponies still :] so you can ride a medium or large pony :]
i am about 5'3 also and i ride and jump and show too. =]
I think you can probably get away with a medium pony, but i wouldnt buy one now, as you might be still growing. I think if your looking to buy a horse, go for a large pony (14 hands +) or a small horse (15 hands)
Those are the sizes I ride and I videtape myself to see how well im doing and I think i fight perfectly =]
