Here's a few things

shipping boots, polo wraps, grooming kit, first aid supplies, grooming supplies, feed equipment - buckets, scopes etc, lead rope. Leave blankets until last because of sizing.

My horse has (don't laugh) a Jolley Ball that he plays with. Its a big rubber ball that has a handle on it and he throws it in the air and kicks it. He is so cute when he plays.
Grooming equipment: hard brush, soft brush, rubber curry comb, hoof pick, mane and tail brush, shampoo, conditioner, etc.

Feed buckets, water buckets.

Halter and Lead

saddle, saddle pad, cinche, saddle bag(if you trail ride).

Headstall, reins.

numnahs, headcollar, leadrope, brushes etc. Not very much really till you know the exact size and what its special needs will be.
You should start with basic essentials such as brushes, a halter, lead rope, troughs, feed buckets, hoof pick (if you are going to shoe your horse). Then once you get your horse find somone to help you find a good saddle if you are unfamiliar with how to measure your horse to buy one, get a girth, and bridle. Go on and have a trailer by the way.
all the basic stuff which i'm sure you know, but some extras would be back cinch (if western), breast collar, tie down or martingale, overreach boots, skid boots, splint boots, button replacements( for bridle), fly mask. i'm sure there's more but i can't think of them now.
well it would be best if you already knew for sure what horse you were going to get. that way you could get the halter, bridle, saddle etc. but if you don't know there is limited stuff you could get. you could get the grooming supplies (such as brushes, shampoo, conditioner, fly spray, etc) You could get a saddle blanket if you want, but that would be a slight risk on money waste as you don't know the horses size or need concerning the saddle pad. It's best to wait until you actually know which horse you are going to get before you buy anything. pardon my babbling ^.^
Get hunter green stuff like halters, lead ropes, saddle pads, ect because they go with every color of horse. So does blue.
All the above answers are good, I would just like to point out that hoof picks are not just for shoeing. Hoof picks are essential, shoes or not, showing or not.
You dont really want to buy much until you have the horse. You wont know what sizes to get for halters, blankets, saddles, bridles, boots, etc.
