I would NOT tightly braid the hair - that puts too much stress on the hairs and you will pull out or break what is there. Braiding loosely is okay, but be careful of using rubber bands, which can break the hair at the end. Don't braid hair on horses that are turned out, as they are likely to get the braids caught on trees or fencing and make your trouble worse.Your best bet is to not brush too often, keep the hair clean and protected and feed good feeds - that will help more than high priced supplements.
Consult your vet. I've heard of supplements to help make your horse's hair shiny and healthy, but not grow any faster than it normally would. Good luck.
