What to put on a mares teets to stop yearling from suckling2007-11-24 21:22:02

I have had my yearling seperated from her mom for the last 4 - 6 months, and yesterday put her back out with the mare and not two seconds mommy was letting baby suckle again. Is there anything out there that anyone can suggest to put on the mares teets to atleast try and stop the baby from doing this?

Answers:

There is nothing you can put on the teats to keep a yearling off'em, =-) I tried bitter apple, and other nasty tasting stuff, and still the babies nursed their mommies. (Heck, one mommy nursed both babies!)

You will either have to seperate them longer, wait untill mom kicks them off, or use something like Udderware, a horse bra. Pretty nifty idea and apparently, mares who are used to blankets have no problem with it;

Try bitter apple, its used to help train animals not to bite or chew. Its harmless, taste nasty so don't go sticking your fingers in your mouth afterwards. Its worth a try. You can find it just about any where pet supplies are sold. Sometimes its called bitter orange also.
Don't put them back together, put the yearling out with a gelding that is a good companion horse. Mamma and Baby havn't borken their bond yet.
Keep them apart again or let the mare deal with her. She'll chase her off and prevent her from trying to nurse when she's had enough but I would rather separate them.
The mare will deal with it when she's sick of it or you can try keeping them apart for a longer period of time.
The yearling really should be separate, or you are going to end up having to "re-wean" her. I am sure the first time was rough on both horses, doing it again is not going to be a good thing.
You can use "No Bite" formulas- they are quite effective- it is like putting the nasty polish on peoples fingers who like to bite them- they are horse safe- obviously!
As a horse owner here is what i used to do.
