What type of bit
what type of english bit should i use on my horse? Right now I have a reining bit with a port the shank is about 3 inches or so and she does really well with it, so i'm looking for and english bit that has saverity to it but is also aloud in showing!
Answers:I had a horse that was trained western, and the people that owned him trained him on a high ported walking horse bit... go figure why. I found that a Kimberwicke did not stop him at all. I might as well have sat on his back with the reins dropped and said, "please stop please stop please stop" for all the good the Kimberwicke did for me.
I retrained him using a double bridle - which is also called a full bridle or Weymouth bridle. It has two bits and two reins. One rein, the bradoon, is a modified snaffle bit, and it sits above and behind the other bit used in a double bridle, the curb bit.
This combo allowed me the freedom to use the snaffle on the flat and at slower gaits, but also gave me the maximum control over fences and at a canter and hand-gallop, which always managed to turn into head-long flight with a milder bit.
Make sure you know your stuff before you sue this combo though, because you can do a good bit of damage with a Full Bridle if you don't know how to use one.
You also can show in one in Jumping, but not in Hunters, at least that is how it used to be...
Have you looked into a kimberwicke?
