What type of bit do I get
I just bought an amazing 10 year old gelding. He can be friskey, but I've rode enough to control him... to a point. His old owner didn't trust her own skill so she used a snaffle, but I don't beleive he needs it, and he always fights it.
I have been riding my whole life, trained a few horses, and taken care of quite a few more. I know bits, just this one stumps me because I haven't had the horse more than 3 days.
Answers:Ok. I think I can help you in this area. I've been in the barrel racing buisness for 8 years now, and i definitely know the whole "i don't know what bit to use" situation.
if you want anything lighter than a snaffle i suggest using an O-ring. it is very light on their mouth, but you can still control them.
other bits i suggest using are- a milar, d-ring, or a draw bit.
if your horse is still fighting the bit i suggest switching to a hackimore, or calling a vet and scheduling an appointment for the horse to get his teeth floated (trust me. the vet will know what float means). also if the horse is just annoyed with you it could be rooting the bit away from you.
hope this helps :D

A snaffle is a very mild bit.
Can you offer more detail? Do you mean he doesn't need a bit at all or that he needs a stronger bit but the former owner was afraid of harming him with one?
I love the WonderBit, it is mild and has several options for rein placement to give you more control if needed.
A snaffle is just about as mild of a bit as you are going to find. if you are looking for a mild western bit try a simple tom thumb. if used correctly a tom thumb is really mild. When using any kind of shanked bit you dont hold constant pressure on the bit, and the horse should move off the feeling of the reins on its neck. Make sure your horse isn't fighting the bit because you are putting too much pressure on it and not giving him enough rein.
