Whats a lead
well i ride horses a whole bunch but whats a lead and how do you change it cause i was in a show and i had the wrong lead and my horse fixed it for me but luckuly we had to walk and i don't want that to happen again what is it?
Answers:OK i have been riding for 5 years and it took me awhile to understand this to. a lead is just the canter. in the canter the horse stretches farther with one leg. the correct lead is always the inside leg which is the opposite of the posting trot.you want your horses inside foreleg to stretch out the farthest. pay attention to the rotation of the horses muscle that helped me and then look to see the inside leg stretching farther then the outside. to get it correct ask for the canter right as you go into the corner.
when you are cantering in a circle for eg. the inside front leg should lead. It feels really awkward if your horse is on the wrong lead, very jolty. If you can't feel it just look down and if the inside leg isn't leading either signal for a fly (which I assume your horse knows as you say it corrected itself) or slow to a trot and resume a canter
good luck and happy hacking
When you are cantering in a ring the inside(right) front leg should be in front. You can check this by looking down on the right in front. It will feel strange and such if the horse is on the wrong lead. If just the back or front has the wrong lead it will feel extremely wrong and scarey almost. Some horses have a habit of getting the wrong lead in some direstions or it could just be the way you picked the canter up. To change to the right lead hoe the horse to the trott with the outside rein for about two strides I'm not exactly sure, I do it so much it's just narural for me. Then pick the canter back up imediatly. I perfer doing this in the corners it's easier.
In a canter the lead is the front leg that the horse throws first and in front the farthest. If you a cantering a circle to the right the your horse must have a right lead in order to move correctly and smoothly--the right leg must take off first at the cue of canter.
