Whats the best way to keep flys, mosquitos, etc off of horses2007-11-24 21:22:40

We've tried the commercial sprays, which claim to last up to 15 days, but none really do. Is there something else that will work?

you can buy fly sheets which will keep the flies of but the horses will tare them to shreds. most fly sprays will work just fine if you spray them every 3 or 4 days but for something that will last longer there are collars that go around the horses neck and keep bugs off for several weeks. another good product is Equi-spot you put it on your horses once and it lasts 6 weeks. Its doesn't wash off with rain or sweat and protects against almost everything. Good Luck

You could get these straps with citronella in them and put them on the halter,legs, etc. They work.

For extreme cases with horses allergic to no-see-ums, the Boett blanket work best.

Hi there. Flys can become immune to the same fly spray being used after a period of time. I use a different one each fly season. No, they usually don't work as long as the label says they will. Also, you need to be treating the barn or area that your horse is in. There is a white powder called fossil bone flour that you can put on the ground in the stall area thay keeps the flies from breeding and reproducing. It is NOT LIME, don't use that. I used the fossil powder last year, and I have no flies this year. Fly masks and fly sheets can be put on your horse. The best fly trap I have used is the bag with the stinky bait that you add water too. Works great. There are the battery operated sprayers that have an aerosol can that you replace and they spray every 3 minutes or so. You can also buy a feed through, that is a pellet that you feed your horse and ends up in the manure, killing the flies. I don't like that particularily because it is a chemical going through your horse's body, but I have friends who do use it with success. :^)
