Whats the best way to train a horse to Lunge2007-11-24 21:22:40

Just curious, because my four year old gelding holds grudges against long ropes. *rollseyes* Any help will be appreciated.

Over all, roundpenning is the best way to teach a horse to lunge, I would say. But yours is so young yet, I would really work on whatever issue he has with "long ropes" or what will happen in the future when you need to tie him, lunge him without a round pen, at a show perhaps, or try to stake him out on a trail ride/camping trip?

Just take the lunge line & let him sniff it. Then gently rub it over him to let him know there's nothing to be afraid of. Then clip it to the halter. Kinda wave it around slowly & then try leading him around. Once hje seems like he's ok with it have him stand in front of you. Then take the lunge whip & wave it towards his shoulder. He should start moving. If he tries to come to you wave it at his shoulder to where the whip is inbetween you. Stay square with his shoulder & keep the whip at his hip. To get him to turn put the whip in front of him to where he will have to stop & raise the lunge line. Then tap his other shoulder & he will turn the other way. To make him trot or canter wave the whip towards his hip. Lungeing takes practice so be patient!

We started with a small circle and lunge line and used a whip to smack the ground behind her hind legs to get her moving and just walked towards her rump.
