Whats the difference between a standing martingale and a running martingale2007-11-24 21:22:42

Almost all the people at my barn use a standing martingale except for one girl, she uses a running. I know running uses the reins and it allows the horse to trip with out coming down and getting hurt and other things like that. I need to use a martingale on my horse (trainer said standing).

Do you need to be more expirenced with one or something?

both keep a horse from throwing its head to high. A standing attaches to the noseband as you should know and puts pressure on the nose to put its head down if the horse tries to throw its head up. As with a running since it is attached to the reins and the reins are connected to the bit and the bit is in the mouth if a horse raises its head to high it puts pressure on the mouth to lower it. runnings are better for jumping because it can move along the reins when u are jumping so your horse can move more freely while jumping, a standing has only one ajustment so if a horse needs to move its head up to jump it kinda hurts them and are giving them mixed signals, but standings are good for small jumping

A running martingale assists the rider in keeping the head down but you can jump in one as it still allows the horses head and neck to stretch out over the fence, the standing martingale has the same effect but is somewhat coarser and should not be used for jumping in. They are classified as an artificial aid intended to assist the rider in obtaining proper form and top line and prevent the horse getting it's head to far up in the air. A standing should never be connected to a drop noseband or the lower strap on a flash because of the risk of causing facial damage and breathing problems.
