Where can I find a nice cheap barn to board my horse at2007-11-24 21:22:48

Don't forget to do your homework on the barn when you go to look at it. Do the horses that are there look well cared for, are the pens large enough, safe enough, is there turnout, who feeds, etc etc...

I also agree that you can always ask to see if the barn/stable needs help in exchange for board.

You usually get what you pay for. If you find a cheap barn in your area, make sure it isn't a hazard to your horse's health or you'll be putting out money for vet bills instead of board.

Look in the yellow pages first, but then ask around at local feed stores, tack shops. You never know someone might want someone to help around the farm and that would make it a bit cheaper to board.

But buyer beware!! The cheaper, sometimes the cheaper the care.

A local stable may also let you buy the feed and that would cut down on the cost.

Just ask, it can't hurt to ask.

To me, a barn's looks shouldn't affect your decision. What should, however, is to establish this:

- When are there people usually there?

- Are they regularly fed?

- Are there well-maintained turnouts?

- How are the stalls kept?

- Where is the manure pile?

- Are the horses there well taken care of?

- Do they look beaten?

- Are they wormed?

My barn, isn't the Ritz-Carlton for horses, and in some ways, I DO wish it were different, but the horses are happy, and so the heck am I!

Well i'm looking for a place to work and i've looked in the phone book, looked around town and asked people and I have two choices! I would look into doing that. wish you luck!!
