Where can I find wooden poles to make jumps2007-11-24 21:22:50

Stateline Tack is a good resource. for stands.

Oil barrels is what we used when I was younger.

If you use those plastic jump stands you can use PVC poles.

I have never seen them break. But you should always make sure they can breakaway. You can also put duct tape on them to make solid stripes

The wooden jumps are called 'standards' so when you go to the Dover website that is what they are called.

PVC poles are alot cheaper and you can use them for cavellites and a 'spot' for jumps.

I make my own jumps and while they're nothing fancy, they do work.

I've used PVC pipe before, and while it looks nice it isn't very suitable. It is light, so the horse's don't get much of a "bump" when they hit them, which isn't good. They don't normally break when they're knocked off the standards, but if your horse ever steps on them they can shatter. And don't underestimate the danger of a shattered PVC pipe. My show mare was running in her paddock this winter, and happened to bang her back fetlock on a broken piece of PVC pipe (from my old jumps) The broken end was in a V shape and very sharp and she ended up puncturing her joint capsule and having expensive surgery to repair it! Yes, it was a fluke thing, but I hadn't realized how sharp and hard a broke piece of PVC pipe is, so I'll just pass on the caution.

I much prefer round poles, the type that you use for rail fencing. You can buy them at any farm supply center - just phone and see who carries fencing supplies. I like them at 12-16 feet long. In my opinion you need two for each jump, either two to make a big X or one as the jump pole and one as a ground pole. Cost wise they aren't cheap but they will literally last forever. I also take spray paint in contrasting colors and spray the poles so they have nice bright colors and contasting patterns - it's easy to do and one less thing for your horse to worry about when you jump real jumps.
