the best place to get them is a tack shop and wood poles are a little bit more dangerous because if your horse hits they can get a splinter. if its painted they can get bad infections that are some times terminal but not usually. PVC really is the best bet or get them directly from a tack shop or online stores have them alot as well! Good luck!

i use PVC, the half inch PVC, and no it hasnt broken yet and my mare knocks it all the time. I shy away from useing wooden poles on jumps cause if a horse knocks it it could leave a bruise of the knee where as PC|VC pipes just bounce off lightly...

:) That's as easy as heading to Walmart-- actually, that's what you do! Any fair-sized Walmart should carry about the right sized poles, just look in the gardening/landscaping section.

My dad made some really nice professional looking jumps for me, and that's were he got the poles for the bars and cavaletti.

If you don't want to buy expensive professional made jumps, you can use landscape timbers (available at Home Depot or Lowe's), but they are not as long as traditional jump poles so your jumps will not be as wide. I use them and they work fine. I also use some PVC poles (the big ones, about 3" diameter) and they work OK, but if the horse hits them they will fall easier than wooden poles. If you want the wide jumps, you can put a 2x4 inside the PVC and cap the ends, and you will have nice, heavy round poles. Also, for longer wooden poles than landscape timbers, you can get 4x4's in the length you want and cut the edges to give you a smoother pole.
