Answers:Agree with Carson, gender makes NO difference when it comes to a good broke horse. Don't look for cheap, but, reasonably priced, not 10's of thousands either. I agree with 17 yrs, but wouldn't hesitate at a good broke 13-16 yr old either, depending on the horse. Find a knowledgeable horseman local to you, someone who can give you references, not a backyard, self proclaimed horseman, to help you pick out a horse. Not someone who is bias to breed or gender either. You may need to pay him/her some money if you don't have one that is a close friend but it will be well worth the knowledge you can gain in your selection process!
To make note to those bashing the mares. I own and compete on several mares and have had MANY others in the past. It is just SILLY to rule out a "good horse" because it is a mare! In my 30+ years of owning mares (and geldings) I have not had a bad one yet, someone gets a mare with a "medical" issue and the rumor mill starts, they all get a bad name.

if this is ur first horse u would want a mare with good training and calm tempurment also u want an older horse for a first tim experiance i would say about a 15-19 year old horse. and read up on horses alot!
Get a gelding for a first horse, especially if you are not a good horseman. Mares can be tempermental when they are in season. 20 years old is too old, try something in the early to mid-teens. If it is to be a trail horse, make sure that it will go out alone or you will be having constant battles to go for a ride.
your first horse? do your homework. Geldings are great, level headed and never moody... never come in heat or want sex. you want middle age.. 10 or so who has lots of time under his belt... on the trail and off. Trailers good, good with the vet, blacksmith, giving baths, clipping (if you are gonna do these things), giving medication(they all get sick one time or another) , getting along with other horses... ask yourself if you are ready for this kind of responsiblity
Gelding! Mares have cycles like humans. They can be very moody because of this.
