Which horse would be best for me
I am a novice rider and i am currently helping out at a livery yard to get free rides. My aim is to eventually own my own horse/pony in a year or so, as soon as i have gained more knowledge and feel competent to own one. . I am not sure whether to buy a young horse so that it knows me from a young age (I could get help training it) Or whether to buy a cob thats been there done that and is suitable for a novice. I would love to know what all you horse owners out there think.
Thank you.
Answers:I assume, you want to further your own skills as a rider. To do this you have to learn things on a been there done that kind of horse first. Basically horses don't "grow up" with their riders as puppies do. A young horse needs you to teach him the ropes, and how are you going to do this as you are still learning the ropes yourself?
It would also be to your benefit if the horse is already well trained. It will make it easier to learn new things. For example-- (don't know what discipline you ride, but just hypothetically speaking ) how are you going to learn to jump if you have to teach your horse to jump first?
Go ahead and play it safe and invest in a been there done that horse. And when you out grow your old schooling pony then consider a younger/green horse that you can make a training project of.
Best wishes!
Definitely go for a more experienced and safe horse whilst you're learning- young horses are more unpredictable and your lack of experience will rub off on the horse. You don't want to have a frightening experience and lose your confidence at such an early stage so go for something that is bombproof and will look after you while you learn.
depends on you really.
