Which is the best way to go on building an arena
I'm wanting to build an arena. I have never built an arena before or anything really, so I was wondering what would be the cheapest way to go?
What is the cheapest material I can buy?
I want it to look somewhat like this:

Do you think that is too small/big? I'm not wanting a huge, fancy arena. Just something I can ride in when I go to my dad's on the weekend.
No, I don't want it to be covered just yet. Maybe later on I will add covering.
Yes, I want sand for the footing.
Thanks!
Answers:No matter what size you make it, if you want sand as your top, you will need a decent base. Something that will drain, but can be packed hard and smooth. Decomposed granite is a good medium. Then have 2-3" of sand on top. The arena needs to be a bit larger if you don't want to strain your horse too much. There is no such thing as a cheap arena if you want to do it right. If you want cheap, just grade an area and put sand on it. It might hold up for the amount of riding you're going to do. You'll just have to see.
That is way to small honey. It may sound big, but a horse's stall is 12'x12'. If you want a small riding arena, for nothing special, go at least 60x90. Nothing smaller than that. You can lope in that with out a problem.

If all you are using it for is riding in, not as a holding pen for animals, you can use just 2 boards for your fence. Use 4" wooden fence posts every 8 feet, and 1"x8" boards in between. If you can get 16' boards, that is best. Figure on about $13 for every 16'. So you are looking at minimum of $300 in fencing, realistically more like $400. Don't forget to add in cement for the corner posts, nails for the boards and gates. Another $100.
