Which to sort out first - Livery or Horse2007-11-24 21:22:54

I'm thinking of getting my own horse/pony. I don't know whether to look for a good livery yard first or to find the horse. Obviously, livery's no good without a horse and vice versa, but I don't want to appear stupid looking around livery yards not even having a horse. This could also be a practical problem as, depending on the breed of the horse, and it's previous routine, I may need different livery (eg stabled/at grass/in at night, out during the day).

I don't really want to keep a horse at my riding stables - the facilities are fine if you're just having lessons, and there are some lovely bridle paths, there's only one (indoor) school which, during my free time (early evening/weekends), would be being used for lessons.

Look for a place first. You don't want to get a horse and have no place to keep him.

I would personally look for a livery yard first. Good yards can be hard to come by and you don't want to be in the position where you end up with a horse with no or inadequate stable.

I would think to look around and find some good spots to keep a horse that are into what you are interested in. If you find a good trainer or instructor at those places then they could also help you find a good horse. You could also get some places in mind that have different things and when you start to narrow down your search for a horse find one that best matches that. I mean I bet you as a person are more int rested in one discipline over another (hunter jumper/ pleasure) and it would be best for you to find a barn to suit yourself. Best of luck though

I would suggest looking at a livery for a horse for sale. Then you could possibly just buy the horse and keep it there. Some livery owners will know of horses available for sale at other places as well.
