A good place should have a welcoming manager who would be happy for you to look around. If they are rude or uninterested, then it's obviously not the kind of place you'll want to board at!
You won't be able to secure a stall without a deposit, but you'll be able to narrow down a list of places you would LIKE to board at, and when you find the horse you want, you'll be able to make short work of calling that list and finding someone who has space available.
Worst case scenario, if your #1 pick does not have room at the time you buy your horse, you can board your horse somwhere else temporarily and ask to be on the wait list for your desired yard.
hope it works out for you! have fun horse shopping!
i would go and have a look 1st to make sure my horse would be happy there...
I would look for the horse first! Looking for a horse isnt a 5 minute job! If you find a nice livery yard you like then to ensure you get a stable you will have to pay for it until you find a horse- which could be some time! Once you have found a horse start looking for a yard immediately and advise the current owners that you need a week or 2 before you take the horse! If you have the money to pay for a stable for a bit while you look for a horse then go ahead and get the livery sorted first!! but in my opinion I would get the horse first!
Good luck!x
I would find your horse or pony first. It can take quite some time to find a suitable equine and by the time you have done that you could have lost your place on a yard. Obviously while you are looking for the horse you can also be looking at yards to get an idea of what is available. Look at as many yards as possible and be prepared to travel to get what is right for your horse.
All yards are used to people going round looking so dont be put off ever,Some will even hold you a place normally for a smaller fee than full price till you find the right horse,Un getting a good yard is very important so if you do find one its worth letting them hold your place for you.Good Luck un take your time finding the RIGHT horse for you,x Gail
definatly livery first as it would be totally pointless getting a horse first as where would you keep it until livery is sorted!
livery!
As the old saying goes - "it's not the buying of the horse, but the keeping of the horse". Always, always, always secure a home for the animal before purchasing it. Doing this means you allow yourself a choice, rather than being stuck taking the first available option when you have a homeless horse. When looking at livery yards, look not just at the facilities but the security of the yard, and how well kept the feed/tack rooms are. Since as well as owning the horse, other things that you own will also be kept on site.
