Does anyone have suggestions for brightening a white horse's coat without having to use expensive horse shampoos? I'm thinking something natural would be good, but anything inexpensive and effective that won't harm the horse would be good too.

We use Mrs Stuarts Bluing. It comes from the grocery store and is cheap, plus goes a very long way as you dilute it in water. Rinse the horse with a white vinegar/water solution, squirt some inexpensive shampoo and a couple squirts of bluing in a bucket and wash. Try not to let the bluing dry on your horse as it can be hard to remove then [I have personally not done a blue horse, but my son showed a blue collared sheltie once - he did the bath and put the bluing straight on]. You can make a bluing/shampoo "gel" for scrubbing on really dirty spots, let sit a couple minutes, scrub, rinse well. Another application of vinegar and water will cut any residue and should make the coat pearly white.

if it is for daily coat whiteness then just lots of washing, baby shampoo is not expensive and is kind on the skin but if it is small ares for shows and things then the cheat way is talc or chalk. hope this helps.

You can go to your local dollar store and buy a bottle of human shampoo then go to the super market and buy a bottle or two of laundry blueing. Then mix the two toegether and this works great. It only costs like three to five bucks

you should use baby shampoo and lather it alot thel when the horse is dry u can pat some baby powder on the coat! this is very effective on the coat and brings out the natural shine and is also harmless to the horse! i always do this before shows!
