Who all has the safety stirrups2007-11-24 21:22:56

My Dover Saddlery catalog has the rubber band type up to size 4.5, the S-shaped ones called "Foot Free" stirrups up to size 4.75, and something called "Kwik-out" Stirrups, where they look like regular stirrups, but are jointed at one side of the bottom so they come apart up near where the stirrup leather hooks on. Sort of hard to explain. Go to Dover's online and check it out.

I use the peacock irons from state line tack, and although I've not needed them yet, I feel much safer using them. I've been drug by my mare in my western saddle, and since we've started jumping I just feel better about having the safety stirrups. I would definitely recommend getting them, as they aren't expensive and could potentially save your neck.
I love my peacock irons. I have been lucky not to have been drug yet, but I have seen it happen to many many people.

The peacock irons will always break... this said, they do sometimes break when you don't want them to. But the good thing is you can still use the stirrup without the band for a while. It doesn't affect the stability of the stirrup. Just always keep some extra bands around.

I definalty recomend these stirrups to anyone and everyone!

I used to have a really spooky pony a few years ago. I went through a phase when I was falling off every other day with him. ( I was 13, he was green, we had some battles lol) but I always rode him in safety stirrups. I'm sure if I hadn't had them I would have gotten my foot caught at least once, I had to replace the bands like 10 times cause I lost them after I fell off. However, they never broke if I didn't come off. There's no trick to getting you foot out... if you put any pressure on the side with the band it will slide off the hook at the top and your foot can come out. I'm an eventer, so I don't know anything about what the hunters do with their stirrups, so I can't answer that question for you, but if you pony is really bombproof I think you'll be alright.
