I ride all my horses with a 'bit less bridal.' (and i own thoroughbreds from off the track!) But i like it better, yes it does have some disadvantages, but most are advantages!!

Horses hate bits, and there's no getting around that. I used to ride my lesson horse in a hackmore but it broke so I had to use a snaffle and he was auful but he was an angel with the hackmore. They just don't like having something in there mouth. don't lose sleep over it, it's normal.

yep i ride bitless i use an Authur-Burris Sidepull. it's amazing! my arab loves it, and she flows with such beauty and refinement in it.
Unless you are showing I'd say go with a side pull. They are less evasive than a mechanical hackamore and easier to learn to use than a bosal. I'm not sure what you are calling a "bitless bridle" but I'd say if you already bought it stay with that.
Every equine I've ever ridden I've at least attempted riding with nothing more than twine string, around their neck. Most of them had no problem with this, however, I only went out of a ring with the ones I trusted with leg and vocal cues. I always ride with a halter and lead rope. Even horses that have never been ridden in anything less than a D-ring snaffle, and usually have no problems. I say usually, I've not been dumped because of lack of control yet... ;-{}
most horses seem to prefer riding bitless, at least in my experiance. most of my horses will ride with or without a bit. unless i am doing something that requires the finesse of a bit, i ride in a bosal or hackamore. some horse just are oversensitive with their mouth, sometimes its due to past experiance or never having been bitted properly but not always. i wouldn't worry about it, if they wont ride in a medium width snaffle (no twist, no wires or chains, just a simple o-ring or the like) they are most likely sensitive mouthed. that tends to be my measuring stick.
I ride my horse without a bit all the time. Sometimes horses that are unresponsive to the bit -- there is usually a reason behind it. Some hate it completely and would prefer the pressure on their noses before having a cold piece of metal in their mouth. Some people think that it is extremely unsafe without a bit, when first of all .. you shouldnt be on the horses mouth to stop or steer to begin with. SEAT AND LEG!
