Why are some horse predominant in either being left or right handed,
I do know that many people spend the majority of time on their horse's left side, and that does affect the way a horse responds from one side to the next. And I know that I most definetely am right handed, and right legged, and this also effects the way my horse works. I can use my right leg much stronger and more coordinated, therefore my horses all naturally move to the left (sidepassing, pivots) than they do the right. That definetely has something to do with me!
Is that the answer you were looking for?
Sometimes it can be down to injury. We have a horse on our yard who has a problem in her left shoulder and hence prefers to be handled on the right. My horse's hips are slightly lopsided so he finds it harder to work on the right rein. No-one is totally symmetrical and that goes for horses too!!
You're answering your own question,DUH
I Ride A Mare Names Candy. She Favors Her Right. She Will Try To Start Out On The Right Lead, Even When A Left Is Needed. She Favors Turning To The Right, Rather Than The Left. No Real Reason Why, She's Just That Way. I Used to Ride A Gelding Name Woodstock. Woody Favored His Left For Leads, But His Right For Turning... I Dont Know What That Says About Him. Horses Are Just That Way. Just Like Humans Have A Preference To Which Hand They Find Easier To Use.
It the way they are first handled and trained, plus horses always have a weaker side same as humans
because they are like us humans, ours always goes better on the right rein than the left, because to him it feels natural, like which foot you put forward first etc.
horses are just like people in that they are different but us humans influence their preference too especially when you start riding them. Are you left or right handed? which ever you are, your horse will most likely be the opposite. you may think that is stupid but it makes sense. think about it. to ask for a canter you use your right leg to ask for the left lead and left for the right. if your right sided your horse will most likely be left sided because your aids are stronger on your right side
that goes into pivots too. let me guess. if your left handed your horse pivots to the right best because you are pushing him over with your left leg andyour left leg gives stronger clearer signals than your weaker leg.that has always been the case with me.
my horse was right sided when I got him because his previous owner was left sided. So when I got him he became left side cuz I was right sided. It makes perfect sense once you see it that way.
