Why are some people (horse back riders) such Hypocrites
Its okay as long as you or the horse are safe, and controlled, which it sounds like you are. Just if you run too much your horse will get breathing problems, happend to me. (Someone ran my old horse too much B4 I got her)
No matter what you do, some people will always criticize it, whether its with horses or not, you just have to keep going.
Hope this helps!

You've misunderstood~~ nobody is saying it's wrong to gallop a horse. The problem is the WAY the 12-y.o. in question was doing it. Here's why:
A knowledgeable, skilled rider taking a fit, trained horse for a gallop is just fine. A kid that wants to 'cowboy' around and do nothing but gallop is irresponsible and dangerous. If all the rider does is gallop from Point A to Point B, they will ruin the horse. A horse that is galloped safely on occasion by someone who knows what they are doing is a different case entirely.
I've seen too many people who think that galloping is the only gait a horse can do, and end up with an injured horse because of it. In the best-case scenario, the horse ends up a crazy basketcase who thinks that anytime someone is aboard, all he can do is run. I get several horses a year to retrain because some clueless kid thought it would be fun to gallop everywhere they went every time they rode, then the horse ended up being too dangerous for the kid to ride. Their egos (and the rest of them) take a bruising the first time that horse rears over backward or runs away with them, and then they think it's the HORSE'S fault.
