Why are there so any abusive horse trainers
SOME TIMES I GUESS YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRIX
You're right that some trainers do go too far, especially w/ the whole drugging thing. I don't mind using crops or gentle spurs but I would never kick the crap out of a horse w/ severe spurs, which is what some trainers do. And I agree w/ that some of them don't realize it and I also agree that some of them are just in it for the $$.
But also on the other end of the stick are the people that think every little tap of the crop or kick in the side is horse abuse. Especially w/ school horse. They have to learn to be gentle around children but this doesn't mean that they should be punished for not being perfect. They should be punished for being bad and rewarded for being perfect.
However there is a fine line between safety and perfection. For example- a school horse bites when his girth is tightened. He deserves a smack on the neck or the pinch on the lip... but on the other hand if the horse doesn't square up then the trainer should try again and reward of he does.
What a lot of trainers seem to forget- even with riders not just horses, that praise is ten times more important. Not only are there trainers that physically abuse their horses there are trainers that verbally abuse their riders. They will yell and yell at their riders to get something right and automatically think they aren't trying hard enough when they fail and then when they accomplish the task they just say "do it again!" and make more specific critique.
Oh I know.that's why I show in eventing and not in hunter-jumpers. Eventers are so good to their horses. I don't know why that is, but I have never seen an eventer beat their horse or do anything another than discipline their horse.no whipping or cutting them up. But hunter-jumpers...oh my god! When I showed with the hunter-jumpers it just drove me crazy, always beating on their horses, crying when they lose a class and blaming their horses. Not to mention they buy a new horse every other year when the old one stops being the perfect one for them.I can't talk about this anymore, I'll go mad.
I know I'm going to get a bunch of thumbs down for this but I don't really care.
