Why cant my horse breathe

Why cant my horse breathe2007-11-24 21:23:17

I would not bet on allergies or COPD because it sounds like he only does this when he works.

Roaring is an exercise related condition - anything that requires heavy breathing - lunging, riding, crazy turnout time with lots of running - and a roarer will roar.

And for all of you who said a tieback is done for horses with COPD -- where in the heck do you people get your information??!?!?!?!?!?! COPD is a respiratory disease similar to asthma - it does not affect the flaps that cover the trachea. A tieback surgery is done to correct a ROARER, not a COPD horse. Geeze.

it sounds like your has c.o.p.d. my first horse i ever rode had it. we took him to the vet and they said to water down his hay so that there is less dust.also they gave us cough syrup for him i gave him about 30-40 cc's of it aabout 15 min before i rode and he did a whole lot better and if neither of these work if you want to spend the money they make horse inhalers which may help. oh yeah also keep him out of the stall or barn where the dirt and dust collects and keep him out on like a grass feild of some sort this also help alot. let me know if any of these helped you.
Heaves or allergies is pretty likely. I knew a horse with heaves and even after a simple ride, his breathing would become louder. It didn't always happen, but sometimes it could get pretty bad.

Talk to your vet.
