The tobiano gene is totally different. You cannot get a tobiano marked horse unless one of the parents are tobiano. Tobiano colored Paints did not origionate from full blood Quarter horses, but often have a distance relative that was a heavy horse. (Of course Quarter horses often have heavy horse in their distant background as well.) This is why tobianos to this day are often considered quieter and more laid back than overos!

Color genetics are interesting. For further info I would suggest going onto APHA's website, or google under Paint, Overo horse, tobiano, etc and you too can soon know more about color than you ever wanted!

You can get them, but they are very rare. This is horse was featured in the Paint Horse Journal because he was registered as a Thoroughbred and also a Paint. You will not see any tobinano thoroughbred, but the overo color does crop up now and then. Look at this stallion. He is pure thoroughbred and about as pretty a paint as you would ever want to see. Which starts a whole nother arguement as to whether or not Paint is a genetic breed (not in my opinion) or a color breed (just limited to the stock / hunter horse types)

Airdrie Apache was foaled in 1993 at Kentucky's prestigious Airdrie Stud Farm owned by the Governor of Kentucky Brereton C. Jones. Double registered with both the Jockey Club and APHA, he has renowned Kentucky bloodlines. His grandfather was the successful race horse and number one stallion, Mr. Prospector. Airdrie Apache is the only TB stallion in the United States to sire 15 white thoroughbreds (since 1999.)
