I watched the HBO special and cried for half of it. The condition the leg was in at the end and even before the last surgeries there was no way that the leg would withstand the pressure of him having to mount the dummy to collect his seman.
And with all the medications they were pumping into his system , my guess the his seman was in no condition to be bred with anyways... that many meds could have made him sterile

If you mean semen, there would be no point - you can't race an AI horse in the US.
An AI horse is "Artificial Insemination", which means that the semen was not delivered directly from the stallion to the mare. Most people with valuable horses choose this method so that neither horse gets hurt.
Besides the fact that artificial insemination is not permitted for registered TBs, Barbaro was in no condition to learn how to mount a phantom.
Pity they didn't, even if the animal cannot race, it would have been interesting to see what qualities his offspring would have had. Now we'll just have to guess.
