Why do geldings make a hiccupping or chirruping noise when they trot or canter2007-11-24 21:23:18

Does the noise come from the stomach or respiratory system?

Having owned horses from age 10 to 25, I've always wondered why geldings make that noise, but never found out why!

Answers:

Technically - its the muscles that hold the penis up inside the sheath rubbing against other muscles and areas in the male horse's groin area. Its like when your drying a car and the rag squeaks against the metal, or when your riding and your leg squeaks on the saddle. Its very normal, although not all geldings will make this sound.

Although cleaning the sheath could help quiet the sound on some, it doesn't work on all horses.

It's the penis ,slopping about inside the sheath. Some can be quite loud and others hardly noticeable at all.

Generally, the bigger the horse, the louder noise.

It took me years to suss it out as well !

i've never noticed this from my quarter horse gelding or any of my mules. it may be the breed your riding.

try cleaning his sheath. seriously. my gelding makes that noise when his sheath needs to be cleaned. you should do this at least every 6 months.

Yes it's the sheath. Not all geldings do it but when they do! I've never heard that it has to do with sheath cleaning (I have mares) but it's worth a try.

it is the penis moving back and forth in the sheath. Stallions do it as well. It is nothing to worry about. But on the topic of sheaths if you have a gelding the sheath should be cleaned at least every 6 months they get pretty nastey otherwise.

Yes agreeing with just about everyone else here my gleding does this too when his Sheath needs cleaning. I couldn't figure it out either then I ask my vet and he said that my horses sheath needed cleaning.
