Why do horses crib2007-11-24 21:23:18

What is bad about it? Is it serious? What are the end results of a horse that cribs? Any extra info. would be great! =]

Horses are thought to crib for two reasons, boredom or to relieve stomach ulcers. You said he is outside but does he have any pasture buddies? He might be bored all alone.

Cribbing is a serious problem because it chews up the wood, is bad for the horses teeth (they wear down much easier), and can even cause colic and colic is the leading killer of equines as it can get to the point where the horse is rolling around on the ground and can twist their intestines.

If you have a horse that cribs you can get a cribbing collar, which isn't guaranteed to stop cribbing but it makes it harder, or you can spray the wood to make it taste bad for the horse to put its mouth on.

I think boredom and it becomes a habit. I have been told that the horse gets a high from it and that becomes the addiction. I have also heard of teeth and colic problems. I am NO expert. Try turning the horse out in pasture more. It is serious for your fence too. Good luck.

i've been working with horses for 8 years and have experienced horse cribing. You know how people liek to get a.... well.... rush or to feel better.. by drinking, well horses crib because when they bite dwn on wood or sumthing else, they suck in air and they get a "rush" and sort-of get a feeling tht well sort-of gets them "high" and htey liek it 2. After a while of ur horse doing it, from cribbing they grind there teeth on wood and slowly they grind there teeth down to nothing adn if they have no teeth, then they can't eat and usually if they haev barely ne teeth it's real painful so they crib more. U can get a cribing collar at a tack shop 2.
