You could try a muzzle too but if he's smart, he'll learn to hook the muzzle onto something and pull back and crib that way. I've even seen them crib off the rope they are tied with. It can cause the value of your horse to drop and some places don't like them as it's thought other horses will pick up the vice.

nasty habit. It causes ulsers, colic and can ruin your fences! A horse that cribs has a nasty habit like biting your nails, it's because of bordem. Go to TSC or something and get a cribbing halter. it'll stop them from cribbing usually, but also try a muzzle if they figure out the halter.

horses crib cuz its an addiction. when they grab onto the wood and gulp air down their throat it releases something in their brain that resembles nicotine, so they have an urge to keep cribbing. cribbing will wear down the horses teeth and cause stomach problems that can lead to colic.

Boredom, and cribbing generally means that the horse has some sort of mental disorder. It can be stopped, by (and I would highly reccomend) getting a cribbing collar. The more you let him do it the worste it gets. AND, it is also proven to cause colic and many other sorts of sicknesses. Good luck!

Cribbing causes damage to the horses teeth, gums, and mouth and can also cause esophagus problems from the wood. This problem can be caused by boredom and also not having a diet that's balanced in minerals. Making sure he has something to eat either pasture or hay at all times and has a mineral block or a diet properly balanced with vitamins and minerals may help but if it doesn't he'll need a cribbing strap. It stops the horse from opening his throat to suck in air while cribbing. There are also products you can paint on the wood surfaces that taste awful to the horse but I have never heard any good or bad things about those so I can't give any adivce on those!

Its bad because when they suck in the air they can also inhale splinters of the wood which could cause colic or a number of other problems (including bad teeth!) Its a very bad habit that can develop out of boredom and can turn into OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder, if it's not already started out that way) and if it's not stopped the horse could suffer some long term intestinal and mouth damage.
